"Art and Democracy" -- Call for Art, deadline 4/18

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION — by and for: art and democracy

Exhibition Dates: June 11 to July 3, 2011

Organized by the Southern California Women's Caucus for Art, this
exhibition seeks to inspire a public conversation on democracy and art
as part of a year-long democracy initiative at Avenue 50 Studio that
includes exhibitions and programs supported, in part, by a California
Council for the Humanities grant.

We encourage Southern California artists at all career levels whose
artwork addresses the topic of art and democracy to submit works that
speak-to and question the shifting meanings of freedom and equality,
censorship and civil liberties and specifically consider the role of
art in a democracy. Or, simply put, does democracy need art?

Liturgy, and it will be informed by propositions on the sacred and profane
in everyday actions of people in public space.

In the contemporary moment, the idea of ritual is a highly provocative
concept. It is most commonly linked to the set of actions in religious
