BIMA Opens Applications for New Daisy Lane: Print & Book Artist Residency

Daisy Lane expands BIMA’s support for artists through studio space, time, and resources

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, WA – The Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (BIMA) is thrilled to announce that applications are now open for the Museum’s new residency program, Daisy Lane: Print & Book Artist Residency. The year-round residency program will welcome artists working in print and bookmaking to a newly renovated studio within walking distance of BIMA and the Seattle ferry terminal. Applications for the inaugural class of resident artists are open from October 1–December 1, 2026 and can be found at: https://opportunities.wearecreativewest.org/opportunity/18155/CAFE.

Daisy Lane extends BIMA’s ongoing commitment to providing direct resources and support to artists. Inspired by the legacy of BIMA’s ever-growing Cynthia Sears Artists’ Books Collection (CSABC), the program is dedicated to artists working in book arts, letterpress, silkscreen, Risograph, and related art forms. With up to two artists-in-residence hosted at one time, Daisy Lane offers a focused, light-filled environment where artists can experiment, develop new ideas, and explore their creative practices.

“Artists’ books have always held a special place at BIMA, from a dedicated gallery space to housing the Cynthia Sears Artists’ Books Collection,” said Erin Zona, BIMA’s Curator of the CSABC. “Launching a residency dedicated to those who create artists’ books felt like a natural next step. Daisy Lane gives artists the time, space, and resources to explore ideas and experiment.”

Artists will be selected by an independent panel for 2–4 week residencies based on their conceptual creativity, technical knowledge, and familiarity with at least one of the studio’s offerings. Housing will be provided for artists traveling from outside the area, and all residents will receive a stipend. There will be one application review period each year, with artists selected for residencies in the following year. Residents will also have opportunities to create public programming during their residency and conduct research in the CSABC archive.

Daisy Lane is equipped with a wide range of tools for print and bookmaking, including an extensive collection of equipment from the studios of Paper Hammer and Marquand Books in Tieton, WA. The initial equipment lineup includes a Vandercook 219AB Flatbed Press, motorized Chandler & Price Platen Press, Challenge Paper Guillotine, polymer platemaker, a wide-ranging collection of wood and metal type, screenprinting equipment, a Risograph machine, a book bindery with a variety of equipment and hand tools, abundant table space for work, and more. Additional equipment from other sources will continue to expand the studio.

BIMA has long been committed to supporting artists in direct and meaningful ways. The Museum established the annual BRAVA Awards, which provide four artists with $15,000 in unrestricted funding across four categories. The idea for a museum-based artist residency program began taking shape in late 2020, as artists faced the loss of jobs, studio space, and physical and online marketplaces during the pandemic. While the CSABC supports artists with completed projects, Daisy Lane was created to support artists during some of the most vulnerable and uncertain stages of the creative process—when new ideas are still taking shape.
